Digital and Analog Hearing Aids

Digital hearing aids comprise more than 90 percent of all hearing aids currently being sold in the United States. Because of their superior sound-processing capabilities, digital hearing aids began gaining popularity in the late 1990s and gradually replaced analog hearing aids both in patient preference and in the market. Digital hearing aids process sound by using computer chips to convert sound waves into binary signals. Once the sound enters a binary form, the microprocessors within the hearing aid can manipulate the sound to reduce background noise and enhance clarity at incredibly fast speeds. AuDNet Audiologists program all digital hearing aids via computer so that they are custom tuned specifically to a patient's hearing needs.

Analog hearing aids are much less versatile than digital hearing aids. They work by converting sound into electronic signals. The AuDNet Audiologist custom adjusts an analog hearing aid with a tiny screwdriver. Analog hearing aids are less expensive than digital hearing aids and may be appropriate for patients on a strict budget.

BTE and ITE Hearing Aids

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids sit comfortably behind the ear and channel amplified sound through a tube to an earmold that has been custom designed to fit securely in the patient's ear. The larger size of BTE digital or analog hearing aids allows for larger amplifiers and longer battery life because they can accommodate bigger Energizer® hearing aid batteries.

In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids fit inside the canal and are less noticeable than BTE hearing aids. They come in several designs to suit the needs and desires of each patient.

Both ITE and BTE hearing aids offer benefit. What is most important is that you see an AuDNet Audiologist who will customize your hearing aids to meet your individual needs.

Getting a Hearing Aid

Seeing an AuDNet Audiologist provides the assurance that the process of getting a hearing aid will provide the best hearing improvement possible. After determining your hearing needs with comprehensive audiology hearing tests that diagnose the cause of hearing loss and ruling out a medically treatable hearing loss, your AuDNet Audiologist discusses the types of hearing aids that will best help you and offers a variety of choices that will suit nearly every taste and budget and that are available at the best hearing aid prices.

Once the hearing instrument has been chosen, the audiologist takes a precise physical or laser impression of your ear canal to custom fit the ITE hearing aid or BTE earmold. In a subsequent appointment, the AuDNet Audiologist fits the hearing aid and custom tunes the instrument to your specific hearing loss, lifestyle, and preferences. The audiologist then carefully explains what you can expect of digital or analog hearing aids in different situations, demonstrates the proper handling of the instruments, including how to change the Energizer® hearing aid battery, and answers any questions.

You will return home to become familiar with the new hearing experience. As you become accustomed to the hearing aids, you may notice situations in which performance could be improved. In a follow-up visit, the AuDNet Audiologist will fine tune the instrument exactly to your preferences.
